January 31, 2014

Thank you to all who have emailed me. This will save time on communicating with everyone at NLMS. It has been really busy for me to ensure every student's needs are met in ELA as we now have a good variety of academic-skills most especially in the morning class.

I want to thank those who made sure their children made it early and on time for the test. The early arrivals had the opportunity to practice for their test, orally. Suffice to say, their scores showed how well they practiced their spelling words.

After the test, we went to Mr. Efren's class and each child was paired off with a younger one to read to while they (the little ones) ate their snacks. It was the cutest thing to observe. Most of the little ones were engrossed in the books that were read to them while eating their snack. That was a special treat for both classes. Finally, the class wrote in their journals about their experience. Those who are not done with their journals will continue on Monday.

I have noticed that the Book Report layout didn't copy so well. I think it was the copy machine, but I'll make new ones next week. Again, there is no due date on the report. The amount of words written on the report does not matter at all, however, the writing should be legible. Using the back of the paper is okay for those who have a hard time writing on the tiny lines.

As for homework, the children were assigned 1-3 pages of Reading, Daily, or Non-Fiction Comprehension. Please check your child's notebooks, and I do hope they remembered to pack the workbooks in their backpacks.

Thank you and happy weekend!!

January 30, 2014

Today the AM class worked on improving their penmanship by writing their spelling words three times, which is also a great way to help memorize their words.  There were quite a few who mis-wrote their words, so practice, practice, practice is key to a perfect - or near perfect - score.

The PM class reviewed nouns, pronouns, verbs, antonyms, and synonyms. To test out their knowledge on the material taught, they wrote sentences using each of those elements and circling the words.

You will see these papers tomorrow in their backpacks

We are not visiting the library tomorrow. If there are any books due before next Friday, please return them. Thanks!

January 29, 2014

Today the children were working on their poetry about Chinese New Year "What is Luck?" They all had wonderful ideas.

Yesterday, they worked on Acrostic Poems by using their names to make words out of them. The subject was on food.

Their work will be displayed real soon.

Homework for today is mostly Reading, Daily, or Non-Fiction Comprehension workbooks. They are to either work on the next page or next section, depending what book they have.

Some of the children in the PM class were given a Book Report layout to do their reports. This is an optional assignment and is due anytime. The AM class will be given the same thing tomorrow.

For January 27-31, 2014 ELA

AKA: English Language Arts

Note: When I say the "AM" class, that usually means I am addressing the class I have in the morning. The "PM" class are those who are in Miss Vangie's "AM" class and I have them in the afternoon, hence, "PM" class.

Please do read the bulletin board as that is one of my ways of communication, and probably the best. I have also posted homework assignments on the board in case your child's penmanship is barely readable ;). That's a work in progress, by the way.

Right now, we're studying nouns and pronouns. You will find the list on the bulletin board. I am providing an image in hopes you're able to read it, and perhaps, print it out.

This week, we've been listing down pronouns we find in chapter books. The children aren't required to read the books, but they just simply write the words down, even if they're repetitive.

As we don't have library this week, the children have an option to write a book report on their chapter books that were approved by their teachers. The Book Report is due anytime. If more room is needed to write, you may have your child write on the back of the paper. I have made copies of the book report layout. If you so wish, you may print out the layout right here:
